Grylls Monument
This restoration project sought to return the monument to its former glory after years of exposure to soot, exhaust fumes, and improper repairs.

The granite had become discolored, finials were missing, pointing had been patched with unsuitable materials, and plant growth had taken hold in the inner roof areas.
The first step involved removing all plant growth and eliminating stubborn roots embedded in the stonework. One of the four pinnacles was discovered to be 50mm out of alignment due to a steel packer left in during its original construction. This was removed and replaced with a bed of lime mortar, bringing the pinnacle back into line with the others.
Fortunately, the granite itself was in good condition. To clean it carefully without causing damage, a light sandblasting method was chosen, successfully restoring it to its original state. Once cleaned, the monument was repointed with lime mortar, and new granite finials were installed to complete the work.
To protect the structure, asphalt was applied to the roof area, preventing moisture from seeping into the stone joints and stopping water from leaching through. This meticulous restoration ensures the monument is safeguarded for years to come.
