Treffry Viaduct
The Treffry Viaduct restoration project in Luxulyan Valley was an intricate undertaking, preserving the structural integrity of this historic engineering marvel, built between 1839-1842 to carry the tramway and leat across the valley.

Signs of leakage from the leat raised concerns about potential damage to the columns, prompting our investigative work. To access the leat, we carefully lifted the granite sleepers, each weighing between 1.5-2 tons, using a gantry system. Once the sleepers were removed, we cleared the sediment to reveal the base of the leat. Detailed drilling through the joints confirmed the structure beneath was solid, with no voids as initially suspected.
To ensure longevity, repairs were made to the joints before repositioning the granite sleepers. The area was then reinforced with a granite dust lime mortar mix to seal any potential voids. Additionally, drilling at the base of the columns verified that the structure was sound throughout.
This meticulous restoration safeguarded the Treffry Viaduct, blending traditional methods with modern precision to preserve its historical and functional significance for future generations
