St Agnes Engine House
The restoration of the iconic Engine Houses at St Agnes, owned by the National Trust, has preserved some of Cornwall's most photographed landmarks.
-
Funded by Natural England and managed by PDP Green Consulting Ltd, with KPK Builders carrying out the work, the project began in 2014 and focused on repairing Wheal Charlotte United engine house, restoring the Old Century tin streaming works, and addressing issues at Wheal Coates and Towanroath engine houses.
Key efforts included replacing wooden lintels, repointing stonework with traditional lime mortar, and stabilizing fragile masonry. Unique features, such as a soot-lined flue beneath the Charlotte United boilerhouse, were uncovered and conserved, while the chimney stack, previously restored, required minimal attention.
This meticulous conservation has stabilized and revitalized these historic structures, safeguarding their legacy and ensuring they remain a prominent part of Cornwall’s industrial heritage for generations to come.
